Renegade Soundwave were a British electronic music group formed in London in 1986 by **Gary Asquith, Danny Briottet and Carl Bonnie**. Active from 1987 to 1995, the group developed a distinctive sound combining **dub, hip-hop, industrial music, sampling and electronic dance music**.
Emerging from the British post-punk underground, Renegade Soundwave first released music on the influential independent label **Rhythm King**. Their debut single **“Kray Twins”** appeared in 1987, followed by **“Cocaine Sex”**. In 1988, the group moved to **Mute Records**, beginning a long association with the label.
Their early Mute releases included **“Biting My Nails”**, **“Space Gladiator”** and **“The Phantom”**. The latter became one of the group's best-known tracks and, with its heavy bass, stripped-down breakbeat and industrial atmosphere, later became recognised as an important influence on the darker side of British rave and breakbeat culture.
Renegade Soundwave released their debut album ***Soundclash*** in 1990, followed by ***In Dub*** later that year. The albums established their characteristic fusion of bass-heavy dub production, electronic rhythms, samples and experimental sound design. After Carl Bonnie left the group, Asquith and Briottet continued as a duo.
The pair returned in 1994 with ***HOWYOUDOIN?***, followed in 1995 by ***The Next Chapter of Dub***. The group's career was subsequently collected on ***RSW 1987–1995***, released by Mute in 1996.
Although their active period was relatively short, Renegade Soundwave occupy a unique position between **post-punk, industrial, dub and electronic dance music**. Their innovative use of sampling, bass and studio technology helped connect the experimental music of the 1980s with the rapidly developing British electronic music culture of the 1990s.
